What you need to do

Focus on these outcomes rather than trying to memorise everything at once.

2

Key language

3

Grammar shortcut

Read it once, then explain the rule or strategy in your own words.

Listening strategy: past tense verbs in speech are marked by suffixes and past time expressions. The ـتُ/ـتَ/ـتِ suffixes at the end of verbs are fast in natural speech — students must train themselves to catch the final vowel. Past time expressions (أمس، الأسبوع الماضي) are easier to catch and signal "what follows or preceded is past tense." Using time expressions as anchors is often more reliable than trying to hear every suffix.
4

Revision sprint

Three short stages based on the attached lesson plan.

1 · Review

Main 1 25 min

Three IGCSE-format listening tasks Text 1 (50 sec): A young person describes their sporting hobby — past experience (childhood), current habits, future plans. 8 multiple choice (3 options): which sport they played as a child (PAST — listen for past time expression + past verb), how often…

2 · Practise

Main 2 12 min

Tense confusion error analysis Go through answers. Focus on: (1) Past vs present confusion — "The speaker said يلعب (present habit — EVERY day). Not لعِب (past — ONCE). The question asked about what he does regularly — so present tense was the answer." (2) Suffix catching — "Could you…

3 · Apply

Main 3 6 min

Cumulative performance tracking Students record: Text 1 (/8), Text 2 (/6), Text 3 (/6) = /20. Plot on cumulative tracker (D1–D5). Students write: "My tense identification accuracy was [high/medium/low]. The tense I find hardest to identify in speech is [past/present/future]. My…

Optional follow-up

Portfolio piece final version due next lesson. Listen to 5 minutes of Arabic sport commentary or news report on a past event (Al Jazeera Arabic sport). Write: 5 past tense verbs you heard (with their English meaning), 2 time expressions that confirmed past tense, 1 observation about the speed at which past tense forms appear.
