3

Grammar shortcut

Read it once, then explain the rule or strategy in your own words.

كان/كانت + adjective for past description: كان اليوم ممطِراً. كانت المباراة صعبة جداً. كان + present tense verb (past habitual/continuous): كان يلعب كرة القدم كل يوم (he used to play football every day). كانت تُشاهِد التلفاز (she was watching TV). This كان + present construction is called the "imperfect" — it expresses repeated past actions or actions in progress. Students use it as a set construction at this stage. Narrative connectors: فجأةً، لحسن الحظ، للأسف — these emotional markers are high-frequency in storytelling.

Revision sprint

Three short stages based on the attached lesson plan.

1 · Review

Main 1 15 min

كان description and habitual + narrative connectors Present the كان system: كان + adjective (description), كان + present (habitual/continuous). Drill: convert 5 sentences from present to كان + present: "يلعب كل يوم" → "كان يلعب كل يوم." Then: narrative connectors. Give students a…

2 · Practise

Main 2 22 min

Personal anecdote — 90–100 words Students write a personal anecdote (90–100 words) about a hobby, sport or leisure experience: a memorable match, a first time trying something new, a competition, a concert, a family trip. Required: Setting (time expression + كان/كانت description). 4–5…

3 · Apply

Main 3 8 min

Read aloud — fluency and engagement Students read their anecdote aloud to partner. Partner identifies: most dramatic moment (فجأةً sentence), most grammatically correct past tense verb, best use of a connector. Swap. This oral sharing of written work develops reading fluency and makes…

Quick vocabulary check

Choose one answer. Mistakes are part of revision.

1. في تِلك اللَّحظة

2. لِحُسن الحَظ

3. لِلأَسَف

4. في النِّهاية

Finish and reflect

Use the boxes as a final self-check.

Evidence of progress

Personal anecdote (collected — past tense suffix accuracy, connector variety, كان use). Partner feedback (teacher observation). Plenary reading fluency.

Optional follow-up

Rewrite anecdote as clean final version incorporating feedback. Write a SECOND shorter anecdote (50 words) about a different past experience — must use at least 3 new past tense verbs and 2 connectors you did not use in the first anecdote.
