Appearance adjectives and irregular colour forms
Study a picture of a family. teacher or partner models: "الأب طويل. شعره أسود. عيونه بنية." You repeat. Focus on colour adjectives: write أَحمَر/حَمراء، أَزرَق/زَرقاء on board — explain the broken pattern (the feminine does not use ة). Drill 6 colour adjectives in both forms. Complete a gapped table: masculine form | feminine form | meaning. Then use 3 colours in sentences about the family picture.
Personality adjectives — describing character
Introduce 6 personality adjectives (لطيف، مضحك، هادئ، مجتهد، كريم، محب). Discuss: which adjectives describe people you know? Choose 3 adjectives that describe a family member and write: "أمي لطيفة ومحبة. أبي مجتهد وهادئ." Point out: adjectives joined by و (and) both agree with the subject. Write 4 sentences describing two family members (2 sentences each) using appearance AND personality adjectives.
Writing paragraph — describing two family members
Using the writing frame, Write a 5–6 sentence paragraph: Sentence 1: هذا/هذه [relationship]. Sentence 2: اسمه/اسمها [name]. Sentence 3: عمره/عمرها [age]. Sentence 4: هو/هي [appearance adjective]. Sentence 5: هو/هي [personality adjective]. Extension sentence: أنا [emotion] because... (أنا سعيد/ة لأن...). teacher or partner circulates and gives live feedback on gender agreement. Heritage readers: no writing frame — write freely.
Guess who?
6 Read their family member description aloud — but without saying the relationship (don't say "my mother" — just describe). Class guesses: أب؟ أم؟ أخ؟ أخت؟ This makes the speaking task a genuine guessing game. You give one piece of feedback to the reader: "I especially liked..." This builds speaking confidence in a low-stakes way.
