Skills Practice
Practise listening, reading, speaking and writing with the same lesson language.
Listening
Listen for sequence. Listen twice: first for the overall meaning, then for evidence.
🎧 Recorded audio coming soon — use the device voice for listening practice now. Keep the transcript hidden for your first two listens.
- What is the main topic or situation?
- What comes first, next and last?
- Write one time or sequence clue you hear.
Check your listening
A successful answer identifies the main topic, at least three accurate words and one relevant detail. Replay once, then reveal the transcript only if you still need support.
Reading
Underline known words before answering.
- What is the main idea or situation?
- Choose one phrase and explain what it means in this context.
- Find one example that shows the lesson language or grammar in use.
- What extra detail could you add to make the text more complete?
Reading support
Start with names, numbers, repeated words, connectors and familiar verb patterns. You do not need to translate every word.
Speaking
Build your answer, then ask a follow-up question.
- Describe your town or a journey using the lesson focus. Include one place, one transport detail and one opinion where suitable.
- Use at least three useful items from this lesson and one complete sentence with the target grammar.
- Add one reason, detail or example instead of giving only a short answer.
Working alone? Record yourself for 30–60 seconds, listen back once, and improve one pronunciation, grammar or fluency point.
Writing
Plan, write, check and improve.
Task: Write a short practical response about your town, directions or transport using the lesson focus and vocabulary. Target: 40–60 words.
Need help? Build your answer in small steps
- Opening: one clear sentence that answers the task.
- Detail: add two relevant pieces of information.
- Extend: add a reason, opinion, time phrase or example.
- Check: compare agreement, spelling and tense with the lesson rule.
Patterns from this lesson you can adapt:
- كيف وَصَلتَ/وَصَلتِ إلى المدرسة اليوم؟
- سيراً على الأقدام
- وصَلت / جاء
Try first without opening this support. Adapt the patterns; do not copy them as a complete answer.
Activities
Complete the activities in order, or choose the one that addresses your weakest area.
How did you get here today?
your partner asks each of 6 classmates: "كيف وَصَلتَ/وَصَلتِ إلى المدرسة اليوم؟" you answer in any way you can. your partner writes their responses on paper in Arabic: "جاء [name] بالحافلة. جاءت [name] سيراً على الأقدام." Note: وصَلت / جاء are past set phrases — You encounter them naturally here before the past tense unit. Then: "Today we learn to describe how we travel — one of the most practical communication needs when visiting an Arabic-speaking country."
12 transport types — vocabulary and prepositions
Study 12 transport types with images. Key focus: the preposition with each type. بِـ (by): بالحافلة، بالقطار، بالمترو، بالسيارة، بالتاكسي، بالطائرة، بالسفينة، بالعبارة، بالدراجة النارية. على (on): على الدراجة (bicycle — you sit ON it, not IN it). مَشياً (on foot — special adverb). Create a preposition table: بِـ | على | مَشياً. Drill: your partner shows a transport image, you say the full expression: "أسافر بالقطار."
Transport survey and preference discussion
Survey activity: you ask 6 classmates: "كيف تسافر إلى المدرسة؟ كيف تسافر في العطلة؟ ما وسيلة النقل المُفَضَّلة لديك؟" Record in Arabic. Report back: "ثلاثة طلاب يسافرون بالحافلة. طالبة واحدة تسير مشياً." Then write preference sentences: "أُفَضِّل السفر بالقطار لأنَّه أسرع من الحافلة وأكثر راحةً." This integrates transport vocabulary with comparative أكثر/أسرع structures from F5 (preview) and opinion language from F4.
Ticket buying role play
Pairs: Student A is buying a train ticket (زبون), Student B is at the ticket office (موظِّف). 4 exchanges: ask for a ticket to [destination], specify one-way or return, ask the price, and confirm the platform number. "أريد تذكرة إلى لندن من فضلك. ذهاباً وإياباً. بكم التذكرة؟ من أي رصيف يقلع القطار؟" This is a Paper 3 transactional role play — exactly the format you will encounter in the IGCSE exam. your partner scores 4 pairs on the mark scheme.
Transport in the Arab world
Cultural enrichment: Look at images of distinctive transport in the Arab world — the Cairo Metro (المترو), Dubai tram (ترام دبي), the Casablanca train, the Mecca Haramain High Speed Rail. Ask: "What is similar to/different from the UK?" Write one comparison sentence in Arabic: "القطار في مكة أسرع من.." This cross-cultural comparison is intrinsically interesting and connects to Cambridge Topic Area C (the built environment and communications).
