Stretch challenge
Choose three matched items and combine them into one accurate sentence or short exchange.
Grammar
Read the rule, notice the pattern and then produce your own examples.
Listening strategy: conditional sentences in speech — إِذا is a clear signal word; students must identify: (1) what condition is stated, (2) what consequence follows. Medical passives in speech — يُعالَج sounds like yu-ʕā-laj; the emphasis pattern distinguishes it from active يُعالِج. Statistics in speech — numbers + بالمئة (percent) are key anchors.
Notice the pattern
- الاستِماع لِـإِذا يُساعِد على فَهم السَّبَب والنَّتيجة.
- التَّعَرُّف على المَبني للمجهول مَهارة مُهِمَّة.
- يَحتاج الطالب إلى التَّمييز بَين السِّجِلَّات.
- الاِستِماع للأَرقام والبالمئة مَهارة أساسية.
Accuracy checklist

Activities
Complete the activities in order, or choose the one that addresses your weakest area.
Pre-listening — academic health register prediction
Study task sheets. Annotate all questions: "Q1 asks for a STATISTIC — listen for a number + بالمئة. Q2 asks about a CONDITIONAL relationship — listen for إِذا. Q3 asks about a PASSIVE medical procedure — listen for يُعالَج/يُشَخَّص prefix pattern. Q4 asks about the writer's RECOMMENDATION — listen for ينصح/يُوصى." This targeted prediction, now in its most sophisticated form in P1, takes only 3–4 minutes and significantly improves accuracy.
Three IGCSE-format listening tasks
Text 1 (55 sec): A nutritionist discusses the Mediterranean diet and its benefits — 8 multiple choice (3 options): which food group is emphasised, what percentage reduction in heart disease is claimed, what the nutritionist says about processed food, one conditional recommendation (if you eat X then Y — listen for إِذا), one passive structure (is recommended — يُوصى بـ), the nutritionist's view on supplements, a comparison between two diets (أَفعَل form), and the closing recommendation. Text 2 (45 sec): Two young people discuss exercise and mental health — matching (Person A / Person B / Both). 6 statements. Text 3 (55 sec): Health expert describes the risks of screen addiction — select TWO correct statements from five. Academic vocabulary and passive structures. All texts played twice.
Conditional and passive analysis in listening
Go through answers. Special focus: (1) Conditional in Text 1 — "The speaker said إِذا أكَلتَ الخضروات يومياً، ستُقَلِّل من خطر الإصابة بأمراض القلب. Did you catch إِذا? Did you hear the future verb in the result clause? You who missed the conditional often chose a distractor that was a general health statement rather than a specific cause-effect pair." (2) Passive in Text 3 — "يُعاج المريض بـ vs يُعالِج الطبيب المريض — different emphasis on the يُ prefix. In passive, يُ + ā vowel in the first syllable. Did you catch this distinction?" (3) Statistical distractor — "The speaker said خمسة وثلاثون بالمئة (35%) but some You chose 53% — how? Reversing the tens and units in Arabic numerals is a very common error. Always listen for the higher number first in Arabic (e.g. عشرون وخمسة = 25, not خمسة وعشرون for traditional order)."
P1 performance tracking
You record P1 listening score and begin the P1 cumulative tracker. Compare to the end of D1–D6 (D6 listening score) as a baseline. Write: "My P1 listening accuracy was [X/20]. Compared to my D1–D6 final score, this is [better/same/worse]. My main challenge in academic health listening is [X]. My strategy: [specific action]."
Thirty seconds of Arabic health speech
Play 30 seconds of Text 1 again. Write: every health noun heard, every Form II/IV verb heard, any passive or conditional structure heard. Compare lists. Count per student. "In 30 seconds of academic health Arabic you identified [average] structures correctly. At the start of F1–F6, you understood zero words of Arabic speech. The growth is real and the trajectory is exactly where it should be for Year 11 IGCSE readiness."

Identify: all passive structures, all conditional sentences, all statistics, and any academic vocabulary from P1. Write a 50-word Arabic critical analysis of how the health expert presents their argument — is it balanced? evidence-based? persuasive?
Plenary
Finish with a quick check and one clear next step.
