Reported speech (KEY NEW GRAMMAR for P2): Direct → Reported tense shift. Direct: قال: "التعليم مهمٌّ." → Reported: قال إنَّ التعليم مهمٌّ (no tense shift needed when reporting a general truth — إنَّ maintains the present). Direct with past tense: قال: "درستُ بجدٍّ." → Reported: قال إنَّه درَس بجدٍّ (ه pronoun replacing the speaker, past stays past). Direct with future: قال: "سأدرُس الطبَّ." → Reported: قال إنَّه سيدرُس الطبَّ. Note: Arabic reported speech is generally simpler than English — the main change is adding إنَّ/أنَّ after the reporting verb, and using a pronoun for the subject.

"قال المدير: 'نحتاج إلى تحديث المناهج الدراسية.'" Ask: "How would you report these without using quotation marks?" you attempt. Most will write قال أحمد أنَّ.. — this is correct. "Reported speech in Arabic is one of the most important structures for academic writing and Paper 4. Today we master it."

Reported speech — systematic teaching
Study the system clearly: Step 1 — choose the reporting verb (قال، أضاف، أوضح، أكَّد، أشار إلى). Step 2 — add إنَّ (after قال) or أنَّ (after most other verbs). Step 3 — replace first-person pronouns with third-person. Step 4 — tense: general truths stay present; past stays past; future stays future (but سـ prefix may become سيـ). You apply to 6 direct speech sentences about education — convert each to reported speech. Then reverse: your partner gives reported speech, you reconstruct plausible direct speech. Check: إنَّ vs أنَّ distinction (قال إنَّ — NOT قال أنَّ; all other verbs + أنَّ).

Pairs: Student A states an opinion about education in Arabic (30 seconds). Student B reports it back using reported speech: "قال/قالت [name] إنَّ.. وأضاف/أضافت أنَّه/أنَّها.." Then swap. your partner listens — checking إنَّ/أنَّ distinction and pronoun replacement. This spoken reported speech practice is excellent preparation for Paper 3 where you may need to describe or report what others have said in a role-play or discussion context.

your partner plays the role of 3 different education experts (briefly stating opinions in Arabic). Write reported speech sentences: "قال الخبير الأول إنَّ.. وأكَّد أنَّه.. في حين أشارت الخبيرة الثانية إلى أنَّ.." Compare four different versions — look at how each one has reported the same direct speech. Discuss any differences: which is most accurate? Most sophisticated? Introduce: وفقاً لما قاله الخبير (according to what the expert said) as an alternative reporting structure.
