Activities
Complete the activities in order, or choose the one that addresses your weakest area.
P2 Range — what 150 words looks like
Study teacher or partner-written model (150 words, article on education and future plans). Annotate: find each of the 9 Range criteria. Focus specifically on: (1) How many times does كان قد appear and is the agreement correct? (2) How many different reporting verbs are used? (3) Are both conditional types present? (4) Is there at least one Type 2? "A text that has both إذا (Type 1, real) and لَو (Type 2, hypothetical) shows the writer can distinguish between possible futures and counterfactual hypotheticals. That is sophisticated Arabic thinking."
Planning — 4 paragraphs, all 5 structures
Task: Article or email (140–155 words) on education and future plans. Topics: (A) "تَعليمي وطُموحاتي المِهنِيَّة — الماضي والحاضِر والمُستَقبَل." (B) "التَّعليم في العالَم العَرَبي — تَحَدِّيات وفُرَص." (C) "هَل يَكفي التَّعليم وَحدَه لِتَحقيق النَّجاح؟" You plan: P1 (past perfect — background), P2 (present + reported speech — current reality), P3 (conditional analysis — Type 1 + Type 2), P4 (future + formal connector + conclusion). 4 minutes. teacher or partner checks 5 plans: are both conditional types planned? Is reported speech in P2 or P3? Is كان قد in P1?
Extended writing — 140–155 words
Write. This is the longest and most grammatically complex text of P2 so far. Level 1: P2 Range checklist + sentence starters for each structure. Level 2: Range checklist only. Level 3 (heritage): no support. teacher or partner circulates: give live written feedback on P1 (كان قد agreement — most common error) and P3 (إذا vs لَو distinction — ensure both types are present and correctly formed). Do NOT interrupt P2 and P4 after P1/P3 feedback — You need uninterrupted flow for the longer paragraphs. Target: 140 words minimum.
Full mark scheme self-assessment
You apply the full IGCSE Paper 4 Q3 mark scheme: TC 9 (simplified to 5 for unit purposes) — is all required content present? Range 9 (simplified to 5) — tick all 9 Range criteria present. Accuracy 7 (simplified to 5) — past perfect agreement checked, reported speech إنَّ/أنَّ checked, conditional tense accuracy checked. Write predicted score /15 and one sentence justifying the Range score: "أعتقد أنَّ نطاق كتابتي [X]/5 لأنَّني استخدَمت [specific structures]." Exchange: partner confirms or challenges the Range score.
The most complete sentence in P2
teacher or partner scans 5 books — reads the sentence that integrates the most grammar structures from P2 in a single construction. After each: "This sentence has: كان قد (past perfect) + أشار إلى أنَّ (reported speech) + لَو (Type 2 conditional) — three structures in one complex sentence. That is the highest Range density possible. Aim for this in your final draft." You submit writing and portfolio piece.
