Stretch challenge
Choose three matched items and combine them into one accurate sentence or short exchange.
Grammar
Read the rule, notice the pattern and then produce your own examples.
Listening strategy: conditional type distinction in speech — إذا is a two-syllable word (i-tha) that tends to be followed by present tense. لَو is a single syllable (law) often followed by past tense. In natural speech at speed, the distinction may be subtle — but the tense of the verb immediately after is the most reliable indicator. Reported speech in speech: the reporting verb (قال، أشار، أكَّد) + إنَّ/أنَّ is fast — students must catch the reporting verb to know who is speaking and the إنَّ/أنَّ to know reported content follows.
Notice the pattern
- الاستِماع لِلبُنى المُعَقَّدة في الخِطاب السِّياحي
- التَّعَرُّف على التَّشكيك والجَزم في الكَلام
- التَّمييز الصَّوتي بَين إِذا ولَو في الكَلام
- التَّفصيل الحِسِّي

Listening
Listen twice: first for the main idea, then for details.
- What is the main topic?
- Write three Arabic words you recognise.
- What one detail can you hear or infer?
Teacher/partner guidance and possible answer
Read the Arabic text naturally twice. A successful answer identifies the lesson topic, any three accurate key words and one relevant detail from the text.
Reading
Underline known words before answering.
- What is the main topic of the text?
- Find two words or phrases connected with “Listening — Travel, Tourism and Transport Texts”.
- What specific detail can you identify?
- Which grammar structure from this lesson appears, or could be added?
Reading support
Start with names, numbers, repeated words, connectors and familiar verb patterns. You do not need to translate every word.
Speaking
Build your answer, then ask a follow-up question.
- Explain the topic “Listening — Travel, Tourism and Transport Texts” in your own words.
- Use at least five items from the vocabulary section.
- Give an opinion or personal example and justify it.

Task: Write about Listening — Travel, Tourism and Transport Texts. Use at least eight vocabulary items, the lesson grammar and two connectors. Target: 80–100 words, extending to 130–140 words for an extended exam-style task.
Activities
Complete the activities in order, or choose the one that addresses your weakest area.
Pre-listening — both conditional types prediction
Study task sheets. Annotate all questions. New in P3: You not only predict WHAT type of information to listen for, but also WHICH conditional type (if the question involves a conditional). "Q3 asks about what the traveller will do next time (future plan conditional) — listen for إذا (Type 1). Q6 asks about what the writer says should have been done differently — listen for لَو (Type 2)." This conditional type prediction is the most sophisticated pre-listening skill in P3. 4 minutes.
Three IGCSE-format listening tasks
Text 1 (55 sec): A traveller describes a holiday in Morocco — 8 multiple choice (3 options): what they had booked before arriving (past perfect), what the guide said about the best time to visit (reported speech — listen for verb + إنَّ), their Type 1 conditional plan for next time (إذا... سـ), their Type 2 conditional reflection on what would have been different (لَو... لـَ), what they most enjoyed, a transport mode they used, a cultural custom they encountered, their recommendation to others. Text 2 (45 sec): Two people discuss sustainable tourism — matching (Person A / Person B / Both). 6 statements — includes both conditional types. Text 3 (55 sec): A transport ministry official describes new infrastructure — select TWO correct statements from five. Formal academic register, reported speech, Type 1 conditional predictions. All texts played twice.
Conditional type and reported speech analysis
Go through answers. Focus areas: (1) Conditional type distinction in Text 1 — "The traveller said: 'إذا زُرتُ المغرب ثانيةً، سأخصِّص أسبوعاً كاملاً لفاس.' Did you catch إذا and the future سأخصِّص? This is Type 1 — a real plan. Later they said: 'لَو كنتُ قد خطَّطتُ مسبقاً، لَكنتُ حجَزتُ الفندق الكلاسيكي بدلاً من الحديث.' Did you catch لَو + past and لَكنتُ? This is Type 2 — a regret. The two types in the same speaker's speech within 20 seconds." (2) Reported speech in Text 2 — "Which person said 'tourism can be sustainable'? Was this their own view or a reported view? How do you know? (The verb أشار إلى preceded it — reported speech, not their own direct claim.)" (3) Academic register in Text 3 — "Did the ministry official use any passive structures? Which ones?"
P3 performance tracker — P3
You add P3 score to tracker. P3 target: 14+/20 consistently. You who are below target write a specific action: "My listening score was [X]. To reach 14+, I will [specific strategy] in Units 16–18." teacher or partner reviews trackers — You below 12/20 in two or more units need additional support before the IGCSE Bridge Unit (P6).
Thirty seconds of travel Arabic — what you caught
Play first 30 seconds of Text 1. Write: all past perfect structures heard, all conditional type(s) heard (label Type 1/Type 2), any reported speech markers heard, any tourism vocabulary from P3. Share. "You caught multiple complex grammar structures in 30 seconds of natural Arabic speech. At the start of F1–F6, you understood zero words of Arabic. This is the progress of three years. It is real and it is yours."

Stretch / heritage-reader challenge
Heritage readers: listen to Text 3 and reconstruct the complete text. Compare to teacher or partner's transcript. Identify: conditional types, reported speech verbs and their subjects, passive structures, and formal connectors. Write a 50-word Arabic critique of the listening text: "How effectively does the ministry official use the Arabic grammar structures we have studied to make their argument?"
Plenary
Finish with a quick check and one clear next step.
