العربية
English
Matched: 0 / 6
Stretch challenge
Choose three matched items and combine them into one accurate sentence or short exchange.
Grammar
Read the rule, notice the pattern and then produce your own examples.
Heritage vocabulary integrates beautifully with all P4 grammar: يُرَمِّم (restores — Form II): يُرمِّم الفريق المباني التاريخية. يَصون (preserves — Form I): تصون السياسات الحكيمة الهوية الثقافية. Subjunctive in heritage argument: يتطلَّب الحفاظ على التراث أَن تُخصِّصَ الحكومات ميزانيات كافية. لِكَي يَبقى التراث حياً، ينبغي أَن يُشارِكَ المجتمع في صونه. Past perfect for heritage history: كانت الأجيال السابقة قد بَنَت هذه المباني ليَنعَمَ بها أحفادُهم. Type 2 conditional for heritage regret: لَو كانت سياسات الحفاظ على التراث أكثر صرامةً، لَكانت مواقع كثيرة اليوم في حالة أفضل.
Notice the pattern
- الحِفاظ على التُّراث مَسؤولِيَّة جَماعِيَّة.
- تَمتَلِك المَدينَة تَراثاً مِعمارِيّاً غَنِيّاً.
- المَوقِع الأَثَري جُزء مِن الذَّاكِرَة الجَماعِيَّة.
- الأَغانِي الشَّعبِيَّة تَراث ثَقافي غَير مادِّي.
Accuracy checklist
- Check the subject and verb or noun/adjective agreement.
- Check gender, number and tense or time frame.

Skills Practice
Practise listening, reading, speaking and writing with the same lesson language.
Listening
Listen for key details. Listen twice: first for the overall meaning, then for evidence.
🎧 Recorded audio coming soon — use the device voice for listening practice now. Keep the transcript hidden for your first two listens.
- What is the main topic or situation?
- Write two key details you hear.
- Which word or phrase helped you decide?
Check your listening
A successful answer identifies the main topic, at least three accurate words and one relevant detail. Replay once, then reveal the transcript only if you still need support.
Reading
Underline known words before answering.
- What is the main idea or situation?
- Choose one phrase and explain what it means in this context.
- Find one example that shows the lesson language or grammar in use.
- What extra detail could you add to make the text more complete?
Reading support
Start with names, numbers, repeated words, connectors and familiar verb patterns. You do not need to translate every word.
Speaking
Build your answer, then ask a follow-up question.
- Describe something that happened in the past. Put events in a clear order and use the lesson tense accurately.
- Use at least three useful items from this lesson and one complete sentence with the target grammar.
- Add one reason, detail or example instead of giving only a short answer.
Working alone? Record yourself for 30–60 seconds, listen back once, and improve one pronunciation, grammar or fluency point.
Writing
Plan, write, check and improve.
Task: Write a focused response about the built or natural world using the lesson focus and supporting detail. Target: 80–100 words, extending to 130–140 words for an extended exam-style task.
Activities
Complete the activities in order, or choose the one that addresses your weakest area.
Heritage under threat in the Arab world
Study 3 images: Leptis Magna in Libya (Roman ruins — damaged by neglect and conflict), the Old City of Aleppo (Syria — severely damaged in the civil war), and Sanaa Old City (Yemen — damaged by bombing). "These are among the world's most irreplaceable heritage sites. They are also in Arab countries experiencing conflict and instability. Protecting them requires not just resources but political will and international cooperation. Today we argue for that — in Arabic."
Heritage conservation vocabulary and persuasive argument setup
Present heritage conservation vocabulary. Key verbs: يُرَمِّم (restores), يَصون (preserves), يُوثِّق (documents). Then: review of all P4 grammar triggers for heritage argument: Subjunctive triggers — يتطلَّب أَن (requires that), من الضروري أَن (it is essential that), لِكَي (so that). Past perfect for intergenerational argument: كانت الأجيال السابقة قد بَنَت هذه المواقع (the previous generations had built these sites). Type 2 conditional for what should have been: لَو أُولِيَ التراث الاهتمام الكافي في الماضي، لَكانت حالتُه اليوم أفضل. Write 5 heritage sentences using these structures.
Heritage conservation argument (110–120 words)
Write a persuasive heritage conservation argument: P1 (value of heritage — present + passive + impersonal passive): "يُعَدّ التراث المعماري والطبيعي ركيزةً أساسية للهوية الثقافية لأيّ مجتمع. يُشار إلى أنَّ المنطقة العربية تضُمّ ما يزيد على ثمانين موقعاً مُدرَجاً على قائمة التراث العالمي لليونسكو." P2 (past perfect — what ancestors built): "كانت الأجيال السابقة قد بَنَت هذه الروائع المعمارية لتَشهَد على إبداع الحضارات العربية والإسلامية. وكان قد تمَّ توثيق كثيرٍ منها قبل أَن تتعرَّض للخطر." P3 (what should have been done — Type 2): "لَو كانت الجهات الدولية قد تدخَّلَت في وقت مبكِّر لحماية آثار سوريا وليبيا، لَكانت أضرار الصراعات أقل تأثيراً على التراث." P4 (full subjunctive synthesis — all three triggers): "يتطلَّب الحفاظ على هذا التراث أَن تُعطيَه الحكومات أولويةً قُصوى. من الضروري أَن يُرمِّمَ المتخصِّصون المواقع التالفة لِكَي تَظَلَّ شاهدةً على عظمة هذه الحضارة." P5 (conditional Type 1 + formal connector): "وعلاوةً على ذلك، إذا اعتَمَدَت الدول العربية سياسات حماية صارمة، ستضمَن بقاء هذا الإرث للأجيال القادمة." Must include: all three subjunctive triggers, past perfect, both conditionals, reported speech, heritage vocabulary.
The intergenerational argument — past perfect + lِكَي
Special focus: the most powerful heritage sentence combines past perfect (what was built/created) with لِكَي + subjunctive (so that future generations may benefit): "بَنى أجدادنا هذه المعالم وكانوا قد صمَّموها لِكَي يُستَمتَعَ (passive subjunctive!) بها عبر الأجيال." you attempt a similar sentence. The passive subjunctive (يُستَمتَعَ بها) is a stretch target — most will use active subjunctive (لِكَي يستمتِعَ بها الأجيال القادمة). Both are correct at this level.
Heritage in one sentence — the full P4 arsenal
Challenge: write ONE Arabic sentence about heritage conservation that uses as many P4 grammar structures as possible. Share and count structures. Winning sentence might use: past perfect + reported speech + Type 2 conditional + لِكَي + subjunctive. "If you can produce a sentence that combines four P4 grammar structures cohesively, you are writing at a level that directly targets IGCSE Grade 9 Arabic."
Useful to have
Things you can make or find to help you revise this lesson:
- Heritage conservation vocabulary reference
- Arab world heritage sites under threat
- Heritage argument writing frame
- Conservation vs development case study (AlUla, Leptis Magna)
Stretch challenge
If you already speak some Arabic at home: write a 120-word UNESCO nomination letter (خطاب ترشيح اليونسكو) for a heritage site in an Arab country — using all three subjunctive triggers, both conditional types, past perfect for historical significance, reported speech from archaeologists/historians, and formal diplomatic Arabic. The letter should argue persuasively for why this site deserves World Heritage status.
Plenary
Finish with a quick check and one clear next step.
