Concession structures (new): صَحيح أَنَّ X، لكِن Y (it is true that X, but Y). Formal counter-argument: لا يُمكِن إِنكار أَنَّ (introduces a concession before refuting). Refutation: غير أنَّ الواقع يُثبِت أنَّ (however, reality proves that). These concession + refutation structures are the final rhetorical tools needed for IGCSE argumentative writing at the highest level.

What makes an Arabic essay excellent?
Study two versions of the same argument paragraph: Version A (simple): "التعليم مهم. Ask: "What specific features make Version B better?" You list: concession (صحيح أنَّ... "Today we learn to write Version B consistently."
Essay architecture and concession structures
Present the full Arabic argumentative essay structure: Introduction (تمهيد — introduce topic + thesis). Argument (حجج — evidence + reported speech + statistics). Write 3 concession + refutation pairs on social issues topics.
Model argumentative essay (120–130 words)
Write a model argumentative essay on one of the social issues from Lessons 1–6: P1 (Introduction + thesis — reported speech + impersonal passive): "يُشار إلى أنَّ [topic] من أكثر القضايا إلحاحاً في العالم العربي المعاصر." P4 (Conditional analysis + conclusion): "[Type 1 conditional]. [Type 2 conditional]. This structure represents the complete IGCSE argumentative essay template. You who master it can apply it to any Paper 4 Q3 argumentative task.
Peer assessment — argument quality rubric
Exchange essays. Partner assesses using the argument quality rubric: (1) Does the essay have a clear thesis? (2) Is there evidence (reported speech + statistics)? (3) Is there a genuine counter-argument (صحيح أنَّ)? (4) Is there a refutation (5) Does the conclusion use a formal connector + subjunctive? Score 0–5. Partners write: the strongest element of the argument and one structural improvement suggestion.
The perfect concession-refutation pair
Write their best concession + refutation pair on any social issue: "صحيح أنَّ [concession]... غير أنَّ [refutation]." Share 5. "The concession-refutation is the most sophisticated argumentative move in Arabic writing. It shows the examiner that you can hold two competing ideas simultaneously and then choose the stronger one. That is critical thinking made visible in grammar."
